A journey that begins at “Nisshouan”

Nisshouan began operating as a temple lodging in 2021, after receiving official permission from the City of Kyoto.
Behind the main hall, a path winds through a tranquil bamboo grove — perfect for a refreshing morning or evening walk in the crisp mountain air.
In spring, guests can also experience bamboo shoot harvesting in the temple’s own bamboo forest and enjoy cooking them freely in the shared kitchen.

At the temple lodging “Nisshouan”, we offer not only accommodation but also various Buddhist experiences.
For those who are often too busy to reflect on themselves, we hope your stay becomes a precious opportunity to reconnect through activities like shakyo (sutra copying) and meditation.
Though these are just a small part of Buddhism, we would be delighted to help you create a unique and memorable journey unlike any other.

Message from the Head Priest

In today’s world, material abundance is greater than ever, and anyone can easily access vast amounts of information through the internet.
At first glance, one might think that in such a fulfilled society, there would be little room for dissatisfaction or inconvenience.
Yet as the Buddha pointed out, people still suffer from the “Four Sufferings” and “Eight Sufferings,” and we now live in a society burdened with stress.

Reflecting on the original purpose of a temple, I believe it should be an open, welcoming place for all — not only for the local community, but for anyone seeking a spiritual refuge.
Houn-ji Temple is blessed with beautiful, serene nature here in Nishigamo. To provide a peaceful place to relax, we have renovated our old parish hall and obtained permission to open it as a temple lodging.

In our stressful modern society, I feel that having a place to find rest and a change of pace is essential.
More than just a place for leisure travel, it is my hope that this calm environment will help you take a moment to truly reflect on yourself and restore a clear mind.
Through this setting and the Buddhist experiences we offer, I hope you will find an opportunity to refresh both body and spirit.

Junyu Kojima, Chief Priest of Houunji Temple

〜For your morning and evening walks〜

Behind our temple, there is a charming bamboo path along the mountain trail, creating a peaceful and picturesque atmosphere.
If you follow this bamboo path further, you will arrive at Shoden-ji, a quietly nestled temple that once served as Gokoku-ji.

Shoden-ji is famous for its kare-sansui (dry landscape) garden, which beautifully frames Mount Hiei as part of its borrowed scenery.
We warmly recommend stopping by during your morning or evening stroll.

〜Shojin Ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine)〜

We serve Shojin Ryori — traditional Buddhist vegetarian cuisine prepared with seasonal ingredients — right in your room.
Enjoy a peaceful morning with these wholesome dishes, lovingly made without any meat or fish.

Please note that advance reservation is required. Kindly let us know at least two days before check-in.
If you have any allergies or ingredients you prefer to avoid, please inform us in advance.

Buddhist Experiences

Shakyo (Sutra Copying) Experience

A precious moment to clear your mind by focusing on a single task.
Even beginners can enjoy shakyo — the practice of sutra copying — without feeling pressured.
We provide shakyo sets in the temple lodging, so you are welcome to try it anytime without a reservation.

Meditation Experience

Guests staying at the temple lodging are welcome to freely visit the main hall and participate in meditation experiences.
You may also join the morning service led by the chief priest at dawn (advance reservation required).
Take some quiet time in the main hall to calmly reflect and connect with yourself.

Buddha Tracing Experience

Using a Buddha image as the base drawing, you place a thin sheet of paper over it and carefully trace the outline of the Buddha.
This activity is easy and enjoyable, even for those who are not confident with writing or for young children.
We provide shabutsu sets within the temple lodging, so please feel free to try it anytime.
